Professional Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure in Sydney

Wisdom teeth, also referred to as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth and usually appear during a person’s early twenties. Although they erupt normally for most people, in some cases, if the jaw is too small, the wisdom teeth can cause pain and may require wisdom tooth removal surgery. At WiSE Dental, every surgical wisdom tooth extraction is performed by a world-class wisdom tooth surgeon to ensure that the entire process is quick and painless.

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Sometimes, wisdom teeth erupt in a mouth that cannot comfortably accommodate these extra teeth. In such cases, the wisdom teeth can become trapped under the gums or grow sideways, leading to serious dental issues.

Impacted or crooked wisdom teeth can cause problems such as:

  • Tooth decay caused by food debris stuck in crevices
  • Loss of bone density around the roots of teeth
  • Severe inflammation of the soft tissue around the tooth
  • Dental abscess
  • Dental cysts and other infectious growths
  • Damage to surrounding teeth due to pressure exerted by wisdom tooth

WiSE Dental may require wisdom tooth removal surgery if:

  • Your mouth feels tender but you are unable to identify the source of the pain
  •  You can feel swelling and inflammation in the gums at the back of the mouth
  • You experience headaches or earaches
  • Your jaw starts to shift over time due to overcrowding
  • Surrounding teeth are in pain or develop cracks

How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Based on the severity of the case, surgical wisdom tooth extraction is conducted using one of two methods. A wisdom tooth surgeon may recommend local or general anaesthesia based on the patient’s needs. A wisdom tooth surgery can take anywhere between fifteen minutes to an hour.

Local Anaesthetic

If the wisdom tooth has erupted through the gums with no major issues, it can be removed using a simple extraction procedure at the clinic using a local anaesthetic. Once the area has been completely numbed, dental tools are used to loosen and remove the tooth from the socket. If more than one wisdom tooth needs to be removed, the dentist may remove an upper and lower molar during one sitting and ask the patient to return at a later date for the other side.

General Anaesthetic

Under general anaesthetic, the patient is unconscious during the procedure so that the surgeon can safely perform a complex wisdom tooth removal. This procedure is necessary in cases where the tooth is trapped beneath the gums and involves removing tooth fragments, as well as checking for infection.
